Last thursday night we went to a panel talking to young authors and illustrators on reading and creating literature for young adult audiences. We had Michelle Ray (author: Falling for Hamlet), graphic novelist Doug Draper came to us, and Cynthia Leitich Smith (author: Tantalize) and Gene Yang (graphic novelist: American Born Chinese) joined us via Skype. They first shared their life experience and the content of their books and then individuallly answered a lot of questions coming from us. How they modified their drafts, got feedbacks from others, is there anyone or anything once encouraged them to be an author or illustrator, how they chose their themes and what they focus the most for the teenage readers. We appreciated their participating a lot!!
I cared about Gene Yang's book American Born Chinese the most because it had much to do with our Chinese people. This book combines three stories happened during different time but connect to each other in the end. One character of the story is Monkey King, the hero admired by the whole China and one of the most famous character during the history of China. However, I feel deeply sorry that seldom American know Monkey King, esp in a small city like Salisbury. None of my classmates knew this even my proffesor. This stimulates me of being a messenger of Chinese characters in cartoons and fairy tales, sharing them with American kids , Mikey mouse, Sleeping beauty and Simpons Family~~
ps: here is the link of the trailer of American Born Chinese. Enjoy it:)
